UPVC Lock Repairs in Liverpool

UPVC doors are the most common door type across Liverpool β€” and they all eventually fail in the same predictable ways. Dropped handles, jammed gearboxes, locks that won't engage, keys that turn but do nothing. In most cases the right part is on the van and the door is working again within the hour.

UPVC Door Fault Diagnosis

What's Probably Wrong With Your Door

UPVC mechanisms fail in consistent, predictable patterns. Describe the symptom and the diagnosis is usually clear before anyone arrives. In rough order of how often each comes up:

⬇️

Handle Has Dropped

The handle droops instead of sitting horizontal. Lifting it takes serious force or doesn't engage the locks at all. This is gearbox failure β€” the internal teeth have stripped. Fix: gearbox replacement, parts typically on the van.

Key Turns, Nothing Happens

Handle lifts and engages, but turning the key to deadlock does nothing β€” or the key rotates loosely. The cam inside the cylinder has sheared, or the cylinder has worn through. Fix: cylinder replacement. Good time to upgrade to TS007 anti-snap.

Key Turns But Door Won't Open

Handle up, key turned, but door still won't budge. A hook or shootbolt has dropped and is caught against the frame. Forcing the door multiplies the damage. Fix: non-destructive entry first, then replace the failed component.

Handle Works One Side Only

Inside handle turns freely, outside does nothing β€” or vice versa. The split-spindle connecting both handles to the gearbox has snapped. Fix: spindle replacement, often with handle change at the same time.

Locked and Won't Unlock

Door is locked, key won't turn back to open position. The gearbox has seized mid-cycle β€” common when a mechanism is already failing. Fix: non-destructive entry from outside, then gearbox replacement.

Stiff or Hard to Close

This isn't usually the lock at all β€” it's the hinges. The door has dropped slightly and the locking points no longer align with the keeps in the frame. Fix: hinge adjustment and keep realignment. No lock parts needed in most cases.

Handle Works But Lock Feels Loose

Everything moves but there's noticeable play in the handle or a clunking feel. Either the handle screws have worked loose, or the gearbox is starting to wear. Fix: tighten if it's screws; replace the gearbox before it fails completely.

Security upgrade β†’
A UPVC door isn't one lock β€” it's a multipoint system. That's why symptoms are specific. Three to five locking points along the edge of the door β€” hooks at top and bottom, rollers in between, a deadbolt near the cylinder β€” all driven by one handle and one key via a long gearbox strip running the full height of the door. When that gearbox fails, every locking point fails with it. When a single component seizes, the whole system jams. Understanding this is why the right diagnosis saves you from unnecessary parts and return visits. The Glass and Glazing Federation maintains the industry standards most UPVC mechanisms are built to.

How a UPVC Repair Works

The Order of Events on Every Job

1

Door Opened First if Needed

If you're locked out because the mechanism failed, the door gets opened first β€” non-destructively where possible. The repair happens after you're back inside. See the emergency locksmith page if that's the situation.

2

Faceplate Off, Brand Identified

Handle and faceplate removed to expose the gearbox. Brand identified from the cap shape, faceplate markings, and the position of the locking points along the edge. Most are recognisable within a minute.

3

Right Part Located

If the matching gearbox is on the van β€” most common brands and sizes are β€” the repair happens straight away. If not, it's ordered same day from the wholesale supplier and usually arrives next morning. A temporary fix keeps the door usable where possible.

4

Gearbox Replaced & Door Aligned

Old gearbox out, new one in. Then the door is checked for alignment β€” if it's dropped on its hinges, the new gearbox won't help. Hinge adjustment and keep repositioning done at the same time if needed.

5

Tested Through Full Cycles

Lock and unlock, handle up and down, key in and out β€” five or six full cycles to confirm the repair is solid. Door closed against the seal to check the locking points engage cleanly. Job signed off and tidied before leaving.

Recent Work

Recent UPVC Repair Jobs Across Liverpool

A selection of recent callouts β€” real jobs, real areas, parts identified on site.

πŸ”§ Gearbox Replacement

Winkhaus gearbox, Wavertree HMO L15

Student HMO back door β€” handle dropping, tenants unable to lock the door properly. Winkhaus 45mm gearbox identified from the faceplate markings. Replaced on the same visit. Landlord invoiced directly.

🚨 Locked In

Seized Era mechanism, Bootle L20

Gearbox failed mid-cycle leaving the door locked from inside. Non-destructive entry from outside, Era 35mm gearbox removed and replaced. Door aligned and tested β€” hinge had also dropped slightly, adjusted same visit.

πŸ”§ Cylinder + Gearbox

Avocet mechanism, Allerton L18

Composite door β€” handle working but key turning loosely with no resistance. Cylinder cam had sheared. Upgraded to TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder while the door was open. Avocet gearbox replaced at the same time as early signs of wear visible.

πŸ”§ Spindle Replacement

Split spindle, Kensington L7

Inside handle working, outside handle spinning free. Split spindle had fractured β€” common on older UPVC doors where the spindle is zinc alloy rather than steel. Spindle replaced with steel version, handle also replaced at customer request.

πŸ”§ Hinge Adjustment

Door alignment, Crosby L23

Stiff UPVC door β€” customer suspected a lock fault. Diagnosis showed a hinge drop of approximately 4mm rather than a mechanism fault. Three-way hinge adjustment restored smooth operation. No parts needed, no lock work needed.

πŸ”§ Same-Night Repair

Lockmaster gearbox, Aigburth L17

11pm call β€” door wouldn't lock, household couldn't secure the property for the night. Lockmaster 28mm gearbox on the van. Repaired same night in under an hour. Door tested through full cycles before leaving.

Is repair worth it, or should you replace the whole door? A new UPVC or composite door costs anywhere from Β£800 to Β£3,000+ installed. A gearbox replacement is a small fraction of that. Unless the door panel itself is cracked, the frame is split, or the hinges are torn from the wall β€” repair is almost always the right answer. The mechanisms inside a modern UPVC door are designed to be replaceable. That's the whole point of the multipoint system.

Specific questions about UPVC door faults, parts, brands, and what to expect.

Got a question not listed here?

07749 321303 Full FAQ Page β†’
Do you carry parts on the van or do I have to wait? +
The most common Era, Winkhaus, Mila, Avocet, Fullex, and Yale gearboxes are stocked on the van in the most common sizes β€” 28mm, 35mm, and 45mm backsets, standard and shootbolt variants. Less common brands and sizes are next-day order from the locksmith wholesaler. A temporary fix keeps the door usable overnight in most cases where the part isn't available immediately.
How do you identify which gearbox I need without me knowing the brand? +
The brand is identified on site from the faceplate once the handle is removed. Physical markers β€” the gearbox cap shape, the position of the hooks and rollers along the edge, any visible brand markings on the faceplate, and the measurement of the backset β€” identify the brand and model in most cases within a couple of minutes.
Will my key still work after the repair? +
If only the gearbox is replaced, yes β€” the cylinder and key are completely unchanged. The gearbox doesn't affect the key. If the cylinder is also being replaced (because it's worn or you want to upgrade to anti-snap), new keys come with the new cylinder.
How long should a replacement gearbox last? +
Original equipment gearboxes from the 1990s and early 2000s typically lasted 10–15 years. Quality replacement gearboxes β€” Lockmaster, branded Yale, Avocet Shootbolt β€” routinely last 15–20 years. The main thing that shortens gearbox life is lifting the handle to lock without the door being fully closed against the seal, which forces the hooks against the frame on every cycle.
Can you upgrade the cylinder to anti-snap at the same time? +
Yes β€” and if the cylinder is being changed anyway, it's worth doing. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder is the current standard for UPVC and composite doors and is required by most home insurance policies. The upgrade takes an extra 10 minutes while the door is already open. See the lock changes page for more on what goes in.
The door was fine and then suddenly failed. Is that normal? +
Yes β€” UPVC gearboxes often fail suddenly rather than degrading gradually. The internal teeth strip in one cycle rather than slowly over several. What usually precedes it is a slightly heavier feel to the handle over the last few months, or a slight drop. If your handle has recently felt stiff or slightly lower than usual, the gearbox is probably already on its way out.
Do you repair composite doors as well as UPVC? +
Yes β€” composite doors use the same multipoint locking mechanisms internally. The outer shell is different but the gearbox, cylinder, and handle assembly are essentially the same job. Many composite doors are fitted with higher-spec mechanisms (Avocet, Yale, GU), but these are all identifiable and sourceable.
What if the door is under warranty? +
If the door was fitted recently by a window company and is under their warranty, it's worth contacting them first β€” they may cover the repair. Most UPVC warranties cover the frame and seals rather than the mechanism, but it varies. If the warranty doesn't apply or the company isn't responding, the repair can be carried out independently without affecting the door itself.
