Lock Changes in Liverpool
Moving in, lost keys, end of tenancy, relationship breakdown, insurance renewal — lock changes are the most common scheduled job we do. Same-day service in most cases if the call comes in before mid-afternoon. Anti-snap cylinders, BS3621 mortice locks, and keyed-alike sets all stocked on the van.
7 Situations Where Changing the Locks Is the Right Move
Some are urgent. Some are just sensible. All are situations where the cost of a lock change is small compared to the alternative of finding out someone else still has a key.
Just Moved Into a Property
The one most people skip — and shouldn't. The previous owner's solicitor hands over a set of keys. They can't account for the copies given to cleaners, builders, neighbours, or ex-partners over the years. None of those copies are tracked. Changing the locks is the only way to know who has access.
Book same-day → 🗝️Keys Lost or Stolen
Not misplaced — actually gone. If the keys had any connection to your address (a fob, a label, were in a bag with ID or a bank card that shows where you live), the locks need changing today. Not next week. The window between losing keys and acting on it is where the risk sits.
Emergency response → 💔Relationship or Household Change
If someone who had a key no longer lives at the property and the split wasn't amicable — or even if it was — changing the locks is faster and more reliable than asking for the key back. Copies may exist. A key change costs less than the alternative conversation.
Same-day lock change → 📋Tenancy Ending
Standard practice for landlords between tenancies — and a condition of most landlord insurance policies. Keys returned at check-out don't account for copies made during the tenancy. The incoming tenant has a reasonable expectation that nobody else has access. See the landlord locksmith page for between-tenancy scheduling.
Landlord services → 🔧Tradesperson Had Unsupervised Access
Builders, cleaners, contractors, decorators — most are fine. A small number take phone photographs of keys to copy later. The equipment to do this costs less than a tank of petrol. If a tradesperson had unsupervised access and you'd feel better with new locks, that's a reasonable call.
Security review → 📄Insurance Policy Requires It
Many home insurance policies now specify BS3621 mortice locks on wooden doors and TS007-rated euro cylinders on UPVC and composite doors. If your renewal letter mentions either standard and your current locks don't meet it, a claim after a break-in can be disputed. The receipt from the lock change is what the insurer needs.
Security upgrades → ⚠️Locks Are Old or Worn
Keys that are getting harder to turn, handles that need more force than they used to, cylinders that occasionally stick in cold weather. These are early warnings that a mechanism is failing. Better to change it now on a scheduled basis than during an emergency callout on a January morning.

What Happens on a Lock Change — In Order
Door Checked Before Anything Else
Lock changes sometimes turn into door alignment jobs. If a door has dropped on its hinges, the new cylinder will bind against the frame exactly like the old one did. A quick check of hinge condition and keep alignment takes five minutes and saves a return visit. If alignment work is needed, it's done before the lock goes in.
Existing Lock Removed
Euro cylinders unscrew from the inside — the retaining screw behind the faceplate releases the cylinder, which slides out. Mortice locks slide out of the door edge once the cover plates are removed. Both are straightforward on a door in good condition. On older wooden doors with paint-sealed fittings, slightly more care needed.
New Lock Fitted
Cylinder goes in the same position — same size in most cases, or the closest standard size if the door has been bored for a non-standard backset. Mortice locks fitted to the door edge and the keep adjusted if needed. Handles reconnected, faceplate back on.
Tested Through Full Cycles
Key in from both sides, lock and unlock four or five times, handle tested, door closed against the seal and locked. Any stiffness investigated before leaving — a new lock that's stiff is either the wrong backset, a door alignment issue, or the keep needing adjustment. All resolved on the visit.
Keys and Invoice
Old keys returned to you or disposed of — your choice. New keys (typically two or three per lock) handed over. Receipt and warranty card left with you. If the work is for a landlord, insurance claim, or HMO compliance, the invoice is formatted accordingly.
Recent Lock Change Jobs Across Liverpool
A selection of recent callouts — different reasons, different door types, same outcome.
Full property rekey on completion, Aigburth L17
New owner called on completion day — Victorian terrace with original timber front door and UPVC back door. Front door: existing BS3621 was compliant but unknown key history, replaced like-for-like plus new deadlocking night latch. Back door: original euro cylinder replaced with TS007 anti-snap. Keyed alike at customer request. Two hours total.
Keys lost with ID, Kensington L7
Student lost bag on the bus — keys, student ID with term address, and a bank letter inside. Called within the hour. Front door euro cylinder replaced with TS007 anti-snap. Back door changed at the same time. On site within 90 minutes of the call. Landlord notified and invoiced.
End-of-tenancy change, Wavertree L15
5-bed HMO — all 5 room cylinders plus front and back communal doors changed between tenancies. Seven cylinders total, two keys per cylinder, three sets of communal keys. All changed and tested on the same morning. Landlord invoiced with itemised receipt per lock.
Insurance renewal required upgrade, Allerton L18
Insurer's renewal specified BS3621 on the front door and TS007 on the back. Neither was present — original locks from the 1990s. Front door: BS3621 Yale mortice and deadlocking night latch fitted. Back UPVC: TS007 Avocet ABS cylinder. Documentation provided for the insurer. Premium reduced at renewal.
One key for all doors, Crosby L23
Large detached property — front door, back door, side gate, garage side door, and garden outbuilding. Five cylinders, all cut alike from new components. One key for the full property. Previous setup: five different keys on a ring, one of which hadn't worked properly for two years.
Post-lockout anti-snap upgrade, Bootle L20
After a late-night lockout (non-destructive entry, lock undamaged), customer asked about upgrading the original builder-grade cylinder that had been on the door since 2009. TS007 Brisant Ultion fitted same visit immediately after entry. Original cylinder was unbranded, no anti-snap, no anti-pick — exactly what a snap attack targets.
