Where Smart Locks Earn Their Cost

The Use Cases Where Smart Locks Genuinely Help

Smart locks have been heavily marketed for the past decade and the hype doesn't always match reality. These are the situations where a smart lock is genuinely the right answer — and the last card covers when it isn't.

🏖️

Short-Let & Holiday Rental Properties

The strongest case by far. Each guest gets a unique access code valid only for their booking period — set remotely, expires automatically on checkout. No physical key handover, no key safe with a code that stays the same for years, no lockouts from guests leaving with the key. Liverpool's matchday Airbnb market is a particularly strong fit.

Landlord services →
🏠

HMOs and Student Lets

Communal entrances with high tenant turnover. When a tenant leaves, the code is changed in seconds — no cylinder rekey, no key collection. Eliminates the risk of old codes being passed on between tenant groups. Ties naturally into wider HMO access control. See access control for the full communal entry solution.

Properties With Regular Tradespeople

Cleaners, dog walkers, delivery services, regular contractors — anyone who needs scheduled recurring access without a permanent key. Temporary codes issued for specific time windows, revoked when no longer needed. No keys in circulation, no need to be home to grant access, full audit trail of when codes were used.

Security upgrades →
👨‍👩‍👧

Households Where Keys Are Routinely Lost

Children, elderly relatives, anyone who consistently loses keys. Keypad entry removes the lost-key problem entirely — no key to lose, no locksmith callout when it happens. The cost of one or two lockout callouts covers the cost of a smart lock installation. Worth considering if key loss is a recurring issue in the household.

Emergency lockouts →
🏢

Small Commercial Premises

Offices and small commercial units where staff turnover means frequent lock changes, or where different access levels are needed without a full master key system. Smart locks with multiple user codes avoid the cost of rekeying every time a staff member leaves. For larger commercial access requirements, see access control.

When Smart Locks Are NOT the Answer

A standard family home with two adult keyholders and a spare with a neighbour doesn't need a smart lock. The added complexity, firmware updates, battery management, and potential single points of failure don't earn anything in this context. Traditional cylinders are more reliable, simpler, and involve less ongoing maintenance.

Traditional lock changes →
Honest advice before you commit: a smart lock needs to earn its extra complexity. A smart lock is more expensive than a traditional cylinder, requires battery management, and has more failure modes. A Wi-Fi-dependent lock becomes a liability during a broadband outage. A lock that needs a firmware update at an inconvenient moment is a problem if nobody in the household is technically confident. Before recommending a smart lock, the question asked is whether the use case genuinely justifies it — because in many cases, a well-fitted TS007 anti-snap cylinder does the security job better and costs less. Ring and describe the property and access situation — honest advice before any recommendation is made.

Brands We Fit

Reputable Brands Only — No Marketplace Imports

🔐

Yale — Most Recognisable, Reliable Range

Yale's smart lock range (Conexis L1, Linus, Smart Cabinet Lock) spans keypad-only to full Wi-Fi. Good security track record, firmware updates maintained, physical key override on most models. The Conexis L1 is the most common fit for UPVC and composite doors in the UK. Available with TS007 anti-snap cylinder to maintain insurance compliance.

🔐

Avocet — Anti-Snap Security Built In

Avocet's ABS smart lock range includes the Affinity keypad cylinder — a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder with keypad access. Security-first design: the smart functionality is built on top of a genuinely secure physical cylinder rather than replacing it. Good choice where insurance compliance is a priority alongside smart access.

🔐

Nuki — Retrofit Specialist

Nuki's retrofit range fits over most existing euro cylinders without replacing them, making installation reversible. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi options with the bridge accessory. Strong app, regular firmware updates, good support record. Suitable for tenants who want smart access without modifying their landlord's locks permanently.

🔐

August — US Brand, Solid UK Support

August retrofit locks (August Wi-Fi Smart Lock) are well-regarded in the Airbnb management space for their guest access code management. Wi-Fi built in, strong automation integrations, good API for property management software. Less common in the UK but reliable where supported.

🚫

No Marketplace Imports

Smart locks from Amazon marketplace or eBay, no-name brands, or discontinued products with no manufacturer support are not fitted. The security and firmware update record of no-name smart locks is poor — a lock that stops receiving security patches becomes a vulnerability. The brands listed have maintained security update programmes over several years.

Installation Process

What the Installation Visit Covers

1

Compatibility Check Before Ordering

Not every smart lock fits every door. Cylinder backset size, door thickness, handle position, and whether the door has a multipoint mechanism all affect which models work. Compatibility is confirmed before any lock is ordered — avoiding the common problem of a smart lock arriving that doesn't fit the door.

2

Existing Cylinder Removed

Standard cylinder removal — same process as any lock change. For retrofit installs, the cylinder stays and the smart unit fits over it from the inside. For full replacement, the new smart cylinder goes in at this stage.

3

Smart Lock Fitted and Secured

Lock fitted, alignment checked, door tested through multiple open/close cycles under load. Smart locks are heavier than standard cylinders in most cases — the door alignment needs to be correct for reliable operation. Any alignment issues adjusted before moving on.

4

App Paired, Codes Programmed, Tested

App downloaded, lock paired, initial owner codes and access profiles set up. For short-let properties, guest code workflow is configured. For landlord properties, management codes set. Lock tested from inside and outside, all functions confirmed working before leaving.

5

Full Handover and Configuration Walk-Through

How to add and revoke user codes, how to check access logs, how to change batteries, what to do if the lock loses connectivity, how to use the physical key override. All covered in a proper handover — the customer uses the lock confidently from day one without needing to ring back.

Nuki retrofit, tenant request, Kensington L7

Smart Lock FAQs

Questions About Smart Lock Installation

Technical and practical questions before you decide.

Got a question not listed here?

07749 321303 Full FAQ Page →
Are smart locks actually as secure as traditional cylinders? +
Reputable smart locks are at least as secure as the cylinder they replace — many are more so. The Yale Conexis and Avocet Affinity both incorporate TS007 3-star anti-snap protection, which is the insurance-required standard for traditional cylinders. The security model is different (digital plus physical attack surface rather than physical only), but with reputable brands, the overall security is comparable or better than the typical builder-grade cylinder they replace.
What happens if the batteries die? +
Quality smart locks give low-battery warnings weeks in advance — usually a flashing LED and sometimes an app notification. Most also have an emergency backup: either a physical key override cylinder, or external battery contacts on the outside of the lock where a 9V battery can be pressed against them to provide enough power for one unlock. A lock that strands you outside on a dead battery is a design flaw, not a standard feature of reputable brands.
What happens if my Wi-Fi or broadband goes down? +
Remote management via app requires internet. Local access — keypad PIN, Bluetooth phone, physical key — continues to work without internet. The only thing lost during an outage is the ability to issue or revoke codes remotely. For most domestic and short-let situations this is an acceptable trade-off. For high-security commercial applications, a wired access control system is more appropriate.
Will a smart lock work on my UPVC door? +
Most likely yes. UPVC and composite doors with a standard euro cylinder backset (typically 35mm or 45mm) are compatible with most smart locks. The door thickness, handle position, and multipoint mechanism configuration are checked before any lock is ordered. Compatibility issues are caught at the planning stage, not when the lock arrives.
Can I have a physical key backup as well? +
Yes — and for most domestic installations, a physical key backup is recommended. Retrofit smart locks keep the original cylinder in place, so the physical key works normally as a backup. Full-replacement smart locks usually include a key override cylinder. Never rely on a single access method for a home — the backup should always exist.
Can you fit a smart lock I bought myself? +
Yes, if it's from a reputable brand and is compatible with the door. Bring the packaging — the backset size, door thickness range, and compatibility notes are needed. We won't fit no-name marketplace imports for security and long-term reliability reasons, but most branded smart locks bought from reputable UK retailers are fine.
Is a smart lock suitable for an AirBnB or holiday let? +
Yes — this is the strongest use case. Each booking gets a unique code generated in advance, active only during the booking dates, and the code expires automatically on checkout. The owner never needs to be present for key handover, key safes with reused codes are eliminated, and the access log shows when each guest actually entered. For Liverpool's significant matchday and short-let market, this is a significant operational improvement.
What does installation actually cost? +
The cost covers supply of the lock plus installation. Standard installations on a UPVC or composite door take about an hour. The price varies by lock model — keypad-only locks are simpler and less expensive than full Wi-Fi models. Ring with the door type and use case and a fixed price is given before anything is ordered.
